The best way to select the right senior care community for your loved one is by visiting it. There are plenty of observations to be made during these visits – just as there are plenty of questions to be asked.

Three Questions You Must Ask an Assisted Living Facility

1.  What services and amenities do you offer?

Each senior care community offers different services and amenities. Even if a brochure spells it all out, ask someone at the facility exactly what services they provide. If possible, get a tour of the place for a better understanding of how they operate.

2.  What if it isn’t working out?

Sometimes, no matter how perfectly you match a community with an individual, things just don’t work out. Is this community willing to go that extra mile to accommodate the unique needs of your senior loved one? Will they make exceptions so that your senior parent feels more comfortable at their facility? And if things really don’t work out even after a considerable settling in period has passed, are the terms and conditions flexible enough to ensure you don’t lose money and peace of mind?

3.  What is your staff – resident ratio?

Every staff member should know about each resident – in case of an emergency, the one closest should be able to act efficiently. On the other hand, too many people tending to one resident might unnerve them.  Ideally, the staff-resident ratio for an assisted living community is approximately 1:15.
