Adult Care Advisors

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the term “Sandwich Generation” describes that demographic of people who are balancing the needs of the oldest and youngest members of their families. What can you do to cope if you are a member of the Sandwich Generation? Can senior care communities and assisted living be of any help? Adult Care Advisors offers some useful tips and advice.

  • Identify a ‘real’ crisis: When you are looking after your kids and your parents, you tend to face a relentless stream of ‘crises’. Teach your family that you have things to do and that their fighting over whose ‘crisis’ is more severe will not help.
  • Ask for help: Don’t hesitate to ask others for help. And if help is offered, say yes! A neighbor picking up a few groceries for you is a simple chore that can make a world of difference.
  • Goodbye guilt: You are not superhuman; remember that. Recognize that you won’t be able to fulfill all your family’s demands all the time. Stop feeling guilty and don’t let it get to you.
  • Take a break: Caring for family is a full time job, but don’t let your social life suffer because your kids are in high school or your parent has a medical condition. Keep in touch with your friends, visit a spa, go fishing, or join a gym.  Taking frequent short breaks is important!
